Parents guide to background check

While World Tutor Exchange does not directly do any background checks on its members, it does provide access to background check providers and their offerings on the exchange. It is important as a parent who is interested in the online safety of your child that you take the responsible first step. Familiarize yourself with the various background check options and the background check providers. Also check the member profile to see if the member has had done a "self" background check. If the member has provided background check details it will be visible on their profile.

NOTE: Parents! According to FCRA and FACTA regulations, you may not be able to directly do a background check on a member of the exchange. If a member already has a background check done, you can request the details of a background check directly from the member, who at his discretion may oblige.

All listings on the World Tutor Exchange are provided by independant service providers who are NOT employed by or in anyway affiliated to the world Tutor Exchange except as a seller of the posted offerings. WTE only provides the online infrastructure and platform for the members of the exchange to collaborate using various means through the use of available technology. It is the responsibility of the parent and the buyer and not the World Tutor Exchange, to ensure appropriate due diligence.

Why background checks?

Background check requirements have changed a lot since early days of the web. The online predators have followed after the profuse proliferation of the social networking sites. Although, online tutoring services are not as directly a threat as in the case of a face to face tutoring session, it is important to insist on appropriate conduct  online. You do this by doing the due diligence with the help of a background check service providers on this exchange.

Why do we need to do a background check for tutors and teachers?

True. Traditionally the teachers and tutors have always been the most trustworthy. In fact, they still are the most dependable and the most venerable of all the service providers out there. But there may be a few who are have brought the profession into disrepute and it is important to guard our children against any potential online threat.

What kind of background checks are advisable?

Available background checks for teachers and tutors include checks on teacher’s educational background, employment history, criminal records, divorce records, driving records, credit reports, incarceration records, licenses, character references, Social Security number, military records, medical records and even their property records.

But you should make sure that you do at a minimum, a US national database check and a sexual offernder check.

As you can expect, every additional check will cost you money and a few of them may even be unnecessary? How many of us are concerned about the propertyor driving records? It is possible to make intelligent choices without being completely neurotic and paranoid.

How do I choose the provider?

Like any other products or services on the exchange, all offerings are rated by your peers. You may also find some of the providers belonging to an accredited agency. But at the end of the day, you may choose to make the decision based on your own personal feeling after visiting their sites and reviewing the testimionials. The service providers listed on the exchange will all go through a trial period of evaluation based on feedbacks, testimonials and comments by your peers. During this perion, we will evaluate the continuation of the service provider and his listings on the exchange.

No. We don't recommend any one particular service provider. But the National Association of Professional Background Screeners provides a directory of its members on its Web site, www.napbs.com.
